Updated: Feb 22

There are endless ingredients available for use in skincare..truly endless! A big part of the formulation process at Roots Botanica is researching ingredient possibilities based on several factors. What is the function? What potency is necessary to actually see results? What is the quality level? What is the availability within Europe? How do each of the ingredients within a formulation interact with one another? Who is the customer? These are all very important aspects of the research phase before beginning to actually formulate a product that I feel good about sharing with you.

These are the top hero ingredients found in Roots Botanica Skincare:

Rosehip Seed Oil

{inci:Rosa canina seed oil}

In my humble opinion, the best carrier oil there is, and for all skin types. This wondrous oil is extracted from the seeds of rosehips and

contains a few essential fatty acids that truly work to soothe, protect, and maintain your skins beautiful glow. It is high in Linoleic acid which helps to maintain your skins barrier function. This translates to protection from external threats such as environmental toxins, allergens, and chemicals. And internally this helps to retain moisture within the skin.

Rose hip oil contains 5 essential fatty acids:

5% Palmitic acid - Protective function

5% Stearic acid - Close to human sebum, nourishing, firming and protecting virtues

20% Oleic acid(omega-9) - Soothing, anti-inflammatory and regenerating virtues, maintains the skin's elasticity, suppleness and moisture

65% Linoleic acid(omega-6) - Maintains the skin’s barrier function

5% Alpha-linolenic acid(omega-3) - Soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits, helps relieve skin irritation or redness

Along with the fatty acids, rosehip seed oil also contains high concentrations of Vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, and K.

Tsubaki oil

{inci:Camellia japonica}

This powerful oil is extracted from the seeds of the flowering plant, Camellia Japonica. It has been treasured for centuries by Japanese women for its exceptional ability to retain moisture and penetrate deeply into the skin, delivering immense amounts of phytonutrients. It has been shown in studies to possess anti-inflammatory activity, anti-ageing properties and act as a strong skin barrier protector. Some studies have even shown it's capacity to inhibit matrix metalloproteinase MMP-1 and to induce the synthesis of human type I procollagen. Tsubaki contains 3 essential fatty acids:

5% Palmitic acid - Protective function

5% Stearic acid - Close to human sebum, nourishing, firming and protecting virtues

20% Oleic acid(omega-9) - Soothing, anti-inflammatory and regenerating virtues, maintains the skin's elasticity, suppleness and moisture

Hemp Seed Oil

{inci:Cannabis sativa seed oil}

Hemp seed oil is cold pressed from the seeds of the Indian hemp plant, Cannibas sativa, and has multiple benefits. One of the richest oils in essential fatty acids, this oil helps prevent skin dehydration and the aging process. Revitalizing and softening, its use promotes the skin's elasticity and brings luminosity. Hemp Seed Oil is considered the most balanced oil in all of nature as it contains the perfect balance of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids. No other plant source can compete with Hemp Seed Oil and it’s naturally perfect balance of nutrients. It is very fluid and easily penetrates the epidermis making it excellent for dry, dehydrated, sensitive, irritated, acne prone or mature skin.

Hemp seed oil contains 6 essential fatty acids:

Helichrysum Essential Oil

{inci:Helichrysum italicum}

Helichrysum italicum is distilled from the flowering tops of the species of Helichrysum that grows wild in the mediterranean. Not to be confused with other species such as splendidum or gymnocephalum, the italicum variety is the only essential oil that contains italidiones. In skincare, italidiones are known to be potent aids in stimulating regeneration of cells. Helichrysum is a healing and restorative powerhouse that soothes inflammation and is very effective at gently supporting the skin’s return to its natural healthy state. Helichrysum Italicum’s anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and cell regenerating properties lend themselves very well to applications in skin rejuvenation and prevention of premature aging. It is also appreciated for its ability to stimulate new healthy cell production.

Maybe most importantly, helichrysum italicum has a very positive effect on collagenase and elastase, two of the dermis enzymes involved in the development of wrinkles and skin sagging. The essential oil inhibits both enzymes making it a perfect ingredient in formulas aiming to slow down the aging process.

Sea Buckthorn

{inci:Hippophae rhamnoides}

Sea Buckthorn is cold pressed from the seeds of the fruit of the plant and is rich in vitamin E, omega-6 and carotenoids. 30% Alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) - Soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits, helps relieve skin irritation or redness

Spilanthes

{inci:Spilanthes acmella extract)

Dare I say they call spilanthes natures answer to botox? This is only to show just how powerful this sweet little plant is. The flowering herb has long been valued as a medicinal plant due to its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiseptic properties. The natural compounds in spilanthes work to reduce wrinkles and improve skin appearance. The main compound responsible for the pro-aging effects is spilanthol. Spilanthol gently soothes the nerve receptors on the skin's surface and thus relieves muscle-induced skin tension. Facial expression lines are visibly smoothed and softened. Spilanthes also protects against harmful environmental influences that can affect the natural acid-base balance and alter the skin's protective barrier.
